What are the Signs of Addiction?

Hard Time Setting Limits

Drink or use more than you intended, for longer than you intended, or despite telling yourself that you won’t do it this time.

Feeling the need to use in order to feel normal

Do you feel different if you haven’t used in a while? Do you have feelings of shame or guilt from your use?

Neglecting Other Activities

Spend less time on activities that were once important (time with family and friends, exercise,  hobbies or other interests) due to the use of alcohol or drugs. A drop in attendance and performance at work or school.

More likely to take serious risks in order to obtain your drug of choice.

Relationship Issues

Acting out against those closest to you, particularly if someone is attempting to address your substance problems; complaints from coworkers, supervisors, teachers or classmates.

Secrecy

Going out of your way to hide the amount of drugs or alcohol consumed or your activities when drinking or drugging; unexplained injuries or accidents.

Changing Appearance

Serious changes or deterioration in hygiene or physical appearance – lack of showering, increased odor, unclean clothes.

Family History

This can dramatically increase your predisposition to substance abuse.

Tolerance

Over time, your body adapts to a substance to the point that you need more and more of it in order to have the same reaction.

Withdrawal

As the effect of the alcohol or drugs wear off, you may experience symptoms such as: anxiety or jumpiness; shakiness or trembling; sweating, nausea and vomiting, insomnia, depression, irritability, fatigue or loss of appetite and headaches.

Continued Use Despite Negative Consequences

Even though it is causing problems (with your profession, in relationships or your health), you continue drinking and or using.
